The Mental Health Benefits of Gardening

One of the most influential experiences in my childhood was when I would help my grandparents, specifically grandfather, in the garden at his home. We would not only do general lawn care like weeding, but he would talk to me about his family's farm in Puerto Rico. He would often recount the serenity and peacefulness of tending to the crops they had, hacking down sugarcane, and enjoying the literal fruits of his labor.

This described feeling is something I try to recreate in my small, but mighty, garden bed I have at home in Chicago. I always have a feeling of harmony with the Earth when I am planting seedlings, adding compost, mixing my soil, etc. It is a way to connect with my roots (pun intended) and feel even more connected to my grandfather.

Gardening is a life skill, bonding activity, and fun hobby, but also a great way to promote positive mental health. Spending time outside can lower levels of stress and anxious feelings as it can be a grounding activity for you to ease your mind. Being in the sun also boosts your vitamin intake which can lead to a boost in your mood and mental well being. Finally, after you harvest there is always a feeling of gratification that can reinforce your feelings of accomplishment and sense of purpose. We hope you have fun planting this season and share your bountiful harvests with us!
